What is a general purpose kit and what can you shoot with it I hear you ask.

When I think of a general purpose kit, I think of something that can handle day to day shooting. It's something I could take on a photo walk, or shoot a wedding with, then take some landscape shots without issue. To me, it covers a wide zoom range and is a basic kit I can build around by swapping and changing lenses for a specific job or task. The beauty of general purpose kits is that they suit most people and their price range.

Below are a few option ideas.

This system would be aimed at the kinds of people that just want to take photos of everything as a hobby, with no plans to upgrade or step full time into photography and a budget of £300.

  • Tamron 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC Lens - Nikon £169 Brand new

  • Nikon D3000, D3100 or D5000 - Used at around £130

A similar person to the one above, but the person plans to learn a little photography and can see themselves spending money on upgrades. A relatively broad category, so below will feature a body a lenses that will grow with you. Budget of £1000

  • Tokina AF 100mm f/2.8 Pro D Macro Lens AT-X M100 100 F2.8 for Nikon - Brand new, around £280

  •  Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM - Nikon Fit - £279 - Brand new, Around £215 Used

  • Nikon D7000 body - Used at around £320

  • Yongnuo YN560-TX Wireless Controller + 2PCS YN-560 III Flash for Nikon - Brand new, Around £110

A no budget option could be easy to go overboard with, but we'll cover the general zoom range with pro level equipment. This will allow you to shoot basically anything without specialist lenses. It won't be cheap, and it is a list to build upon that most of us photographers dream of. With proper care, this kit could last a lifetime...

  • Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 G AF-S ED Lens - Brand new, Around £1459
  • Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 G AF-S ED Lens - Brand new, Around £1399

  • Nikon 70-200mm AF-S Nikkor f2.8G ED VR II Lens - Brand new, Around £1799

  • Nikon D500 body - Brand new, Around £1729

  • Nikon SB-5000 Speedlight Flashgun - Brand new, Around £499

The kit listed above comes in at a rough £7000 and is an eye watering price! Nobody said photography was a cheap hobby...
